What I Wore: Spring Leopard

Another day, another fun Gwynnie Bee find!  I'm not very familiar with Evans, as I have never bought anything from their site yet (though there is always plenty I want!).  A previous GB try-on with Evans featured a top that didn't work too well for me.  I was so excited when I put this top on though, because it is such a gem!

I'm wearing this top in a 22/24.  It is a little fitted in the hips with its banded bottom, which works well for this particular style.  The dolman sleeve detail isn't too big or baggy, and the fabric hangs in such a way that it is fitted in all the right places.  Speaking of the fabric, it is really soft and stretchy which lends a comfort and ease of wear with this top.  I loved it as soon as I put it on my body!  The sleeves are three-quarter length with a more relaxed fit and slits along the outer portion of the sleeve.  I know a lot of people don't like "cold-shoulder" styles or shy away from them, but I really like them.  I own a few Kiyonna pieces with the same detail.  The cold-shoulder aspect gives coverage to arms you may want to keep under wraps, but shows some skin and keeps you cool in warmer months.  It is a great option if you want to wear sleeves, but don't want to wear sleeves, at the same time. lol

In styling this top, I really wanted to add pops of color and give the outfit a spring-like flair.  I tried on my new red and pink bib necklace I picked up on clearance at Charming Charlie a couple weeks ago.  It looked so fun paired with the leopard!  A pair of pink wedges later and I was strutting around in the sunshine.  The top looks great dressed up, but could just as easily go with shorts, capris, pencil skirts, or tucked into a full skirt.  Because the banded bottom is great for changing proportions of a top, it would even pair well with a maxi skirt.

  1. I'm still on the fence about cold-shoulder things....largely because they're often with dolman sleeves, which I do not like on me. The shirt you're wearing is better, because the stitch in the middle keeps the slit not as ... flappy. Lol. I also love love love the necklace and pink shoes :)

  2. I just can't make myself like cold-shoulder tops. I don't look at them on other people and dislike them or anything, but I feel sloppy wearing them. If they had another stitch so they were basically showing skin but not the slits were totally open, I think I'd be fine. I actually had this top out from GB and liked the print, but I am on the high side of a 24, so got the 26/28 to be safe, and it was HUGE on me. After seeing it on you though (love how you styled it! And totally different look when it actually fits. lol), I've recloseted in the 22/24 with plans of throwing a blazer or cardigan over it to cover the sleeves if I like the fit of that one better. So happy to have found your blog :D

  3. Thank you! I was so excited when I found that necklace on clearance when I popped in for a visit. You know I love a good deal! The combo of necklace and shoes made me so happy!

I totally get the wariness of the cold shoulder. I certainly don't think they all work and I am not a big fan of dolman sleeves. If this top didn't have that middle stitch, I would probably sing a completely different tune. While I do love them for coverage vs coolness, they can look cheap and trashy when done wrong. And the other thing that was great is that the dolman portion wasn't too crazy big like a lot of tops can be. If I had a bigger size, I think it would have been sloppy and not good, but I think it was fitted enough that it worked. And it really looked a lot cuter in person than it even does in these photos. That is another thing that is hard to convey on a blog. lol

  4. I'm so happy you found it too. I love reading your comments and getting to know your thoughts on these things.

I really do think fit, especially with dolman sleeves that can be huge and the tendency for cold shoulder sleeves to hang open a bit, is key in pieces like this. I was just commenting below, if this had been too big, it would have skewed sloppy in a second and I probably wouldn't have liked it. I also like that these sleeves do have the stitch in the middle and the wider black trimming so they don't just hang there. Cold shoulder sleeves can look trashy or cheap when not done right, but I feel like they got this top right. The fit through the hips and the smaller dolman sleeves made it work for my personal taste. Obviously, it will look different on everyone's different body, so I would love know what you think when you try it again!
