6 years and counting...

DivineMrsDiva.com - 6th Anniversary

Yay!  It is that time of year where we get to celebrate another year of being happily married and ecstatically in love.  I am so proud of my marriage and my relationship with my husband.  He is truly my best friend.  Lately, in an effort to help others, I have had to look back at my childhood and my life before I ever met Sean.  It makes me happy to know that despite the way I was raised, I have a happy life full of love and the ability to have a happy and successful marriage.

While I certainly don't think you can count on someone else to "complete you" (insert Jerry Maguire's sad face), it sure helps when you have a cheerleader to help build you back up when you are so broken.  So with that, I say I LOVE YOU, Sean!!  And I look forward to many, many, many more years together!

Sappiness aside, I also wanted to let you guys know that I will be taking a little vacation from the blog next week while we go on our trip to Seattle.  Follow me on Instagram or Twitter (both @DivineMrsDiva) to see pictures of our adventure. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

See you in a week!

What I Wore: Sartorial Medley - May Flowers

DivineMrsDiva.com - Kohl's Jennifer Lopez Floral Maxi Dress, Trotters Kylie Sandal, GroopDealz Flora Necklace

Today's post is part of the monthly Sartorial Medley feature.  To participate, look for the information at the bottom of this post....

Our yard is in bloom and the flowers seem to get bigger every day.  It is quite fun to watch the progression of all the foliage as it grows in better weather.  I find myself taking pictures of bushes and flowers at least twice a week.  lol

Speaking of flowers...On my birthday, I found this dress at Kohl's as I was shopping with the mom-in-law.  I rarely find something in Kohl's that I like because the plus section is SO small and filled with very dated and conservative styles (at my local Kohl's anyway).  But I saw this dress and thought it was so vibrant and beautiful that I needed to try it on.

I didn't expect it to fit either; clothing at Kohl's never fit me right before.  Since my body has changed in the last six months or so, I said 'What the hell?!' and tried it on.  And it was awesome!  The jersey fabric hangs and flows beautifully.  The neckline is perfect and the ruched fabric at the waist isn't too baggy and sits in just the right place.  It is such a comfortable dress to wear, while still looking so polished.  Maxi dresses are great for that!  While the 3X fit well, I felt that it was a little big in the bust so I sized down to a 2X.  I plan on wearing this to dinner in Seattle during our celebratory anniversary trip.  A shrug will, most likely, be in order, but for now I am showing my arms more freely!

For reference, I am 5'9" and wear a 22/24.

These shoes are new to me too.  I found them on Amazon while searching for comfortable sandals.  So far, they are very comfortable to walk in and add a little pizzazz to casual ensembles.  The closures are velcro, but I don't feel like they look tacky or bulky in person.  Plus, they fit my wide feet very well.

There was a rain storm coming in when I took these photos, so I was constantly fixing the dress and my hair.  I thought I would add a candid shot:

What I Wore: Nic + Zoe My Darling Jacket

DivineMrsDiva.com - Gwynnie Bee Nic + Zoe My Darling Jacket; Lane Bryant Distressed Skinny Jean, Floral Striped Tank, and Silver Link Necklace; Avenue Purple Loafers

After radiation, I signed back up for Gwynnie Bee and have been trying as many new brands and styles as I can. It is fun to play dress up and try things I normally wouldn't have the opportunity to try.  At first I wasn't sure how to style this jacket, but I was really happy with the end result.

The brand, Nic + Zoe, is totally new to me.  I have since found out that Nordstrom carries this brand, which explains why I never knew about them.  My Nordies has a practically non-existent Plus selection. On the Gwynnie Bee model, this jacket looked very fitted and more cropped in length.  I went ahead and got it in a 3X, though I think I should have sized down.  The jacket was oversized on me, bordering on too large, but I was really drawn to the comfy factor and thought it had great potential.

The material isn't too thick.  It acts more as a cardigan than a blazer per se.  It is soft, cozy, and easy to wear.  The long sleeves can be pushed up and stay in place rather well. I really liked the piping features at first, especially in the back and on the hips.  But the thing that really bothered me about this jacket was the shoulder/lapel piping.  Granted, I think it looks great in the photos, but in person it made my shoulders look wider and seemed a bit off.  I just don't think it worked for me personally.

Because of the oversized fit and off piping, I was kind of thrown as to how to style it.  I am grateful for my clothing playground, so I just started playing.  I went with the floral and striped top because it has a lot of navy in it like the jacket.  More fitted skinny jeans balanced out the larger jacket, while the purple loafers tied in to the florals and seemed to fit with the blazer-like qualities of the jacket.

If you have the opportunity to try this jacket, I recommend sizing down for a less over-sized look, but be advised that the piping makes broad shoulders seem more broad.

What I Wore: Brunching in Lace

DivineMrsDiva.com - Kiyonna Sweet Leah Lace Dress, Avenue Peep Toe Flats, Lane Bryant Silver Link Necklace

To celebrate Mother's Day (and my birthday), we opted to try something new and head out to Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington for their big Mother's Day Brunch.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous!!  From our table by the window, we watched kids run around outside and moms and grandmas take naps in the sun.  Sean, his mom Sharon, and I dined on mimosas, smoked salmon, eggs benedict, sausage and bacon, vegetable salads, baked fish, clam chowder, waffles, prime rib, and a selection of desserts.  It was expensive, but tasty!  After brunch, we all headed outside to sit in the sun and breath in the fresh air.  Did I mention how pretty the scenery was?

The lovely people at Kiyonna sent me the Sweet Leah Lace Dress, which was perfect for this outing.  I love the combination of the plum and blue together!  The lining of the dress is a rich shade of purple in a thicker, but breathable, stretchy material.  It could be worn by itself or with other accessories because it isn't attached to the beautiful blue lace shell.  One thing to note: A lot of my necklaces snagged on the lace, so smoother jewelry or shorter necklaces are ideal.  The one I am wearing snagged a little on the lace and just stayed in place.  The lace also has some stretch to it that makes this dress comfortable to wear, while still adding a bit of dressiness and texture.  After a forty-five minute car ride and stuffing my face with deliciousness, I still looked and felt incredible in this frock.  (And was kind of obsessed with swishing the full skirt around like I was dancing.)

I am still in awe of the beauty of the Northwest.  It never gets old seeing Mount Saint Helens or Mount Hood in the background. On this trail back to the parking lot, it reminded me of the Forest Moon of Endor.  The last photo was taken as we crossed the Bridge of the Gods.

What I Didn't Wear: Karen Kane A-Line Dress

Hello!

Life made me take an impromptu break from blogging last week.  I have just been super, duper busy (with fun things!) and have had to rest and regroup and clean.  All the goings on have been rather exciting and, considering I was stuck in a plastic covered room just two months ago, I have been very grateful for all the happenings, gatherings, and parties.  I do have a lot of fun things to show you though, so I kinda need to get on that!

Easing back into this week, I thought I would post another in my What I Didn't Wear series where I show you things that don't work on me.  It has been a while since I did one of these posts, so I want to share my reasons again:

Not everything fits or fits well.  Not every brand or style of clothing will work for your body, make you feel awesome, or be what you want it to be.  Not every size is made to the same measurements across the board.  Showing you what I didn't wear gives you an idea of how an item is cut or made and gives you another idea of how it might (or might not) work for you.

This is not intended to be negative about my body or anyone else's body.  It isn't about putting down a brand or talking smack, but to give you an honest look at how things fit that wouldn't normally make it into a blog post.  You can read my two previous posts in the series here and here.

What I Didn't Wear: Karen Kane A-Line Dress

I love trying new brands and new styles, even if they don't quite work.  This Karen Kane dress has great potential, it just didn't work for me.  My main issue was that it was just too clingy in spots I didn't want it to cling.  Even though my Spanx would have smoothed me out and possibly made the dress fit me more to my liking, I didn't feel like stuffing myself into my shapewear.  Two or three more inches of room in the hips, and I would totally be wearing it!

What I Didn't Wear: Karen Kane A-Line Dress

The great things about this dress outweigh the problems.  I LOVE how soft the fabric is.  It seems like a thinner, stretchy sweater-like material - movable and breathable - but is so fantastically soft that I just kept petting the fabric.  I don't think it is intended to be a high/low dress, but it hung that way on me and I liked it!  The bust fit perfect, the sleeves were comfortable, and my butt looked awesome in it.

What I Didn't Wear: Karen Kane A-Line Dress

Overall, it is a very comfortable dress that can be worn in multiple seasons.  It is so comfortable you could sleep in it like jammies. But I think the silhouette is more suited to inverted triangle and maybe diamond shaped ladies.

For reference, I am 5'9", size 24, and wore this in a 3X.  Since the hips were my main gripe, I will also tell you that mine are 60" all the way around.

I couldn't find the dress online, but Gwynnie Bee has it in rotation.  Have you tried this dress or other items from Karen Kane?  Let me know how you like them!

What I Wore: Hearts and Stars

DivineMrsDiva.com - ASOS Curve Hearts and Stars Skater Dress, Fashion Bug Glitter Flats, Betsey Johnson Star Necklace

I finally got some highlights!!  I haven't had highlights for ten years and thought this summer was the perfect time to take the plunge!  The two times I have tried to do my own highlights just left me with orange streaks.  No more!  This will be a summer look at the least, though I am loving my brighter 'do.

I've been waiting since March to wear this dress.  Not only did we finally have decent enough weather (and by "decent enough" I mean it hasn't been raining 24/7), but it was a great choice for sitting in a salon chair for two hours and running countless errands after.  It is a very simple style reminiscent of something I wore in middle school, but I love that ease of wear for laid-back days running around town.  The material is a really stretchy jersey fabric that is soft and swingy.  The neckline is very wide, but still accommodates a regular bra.

I did buy this in the longer length, even though it wasn't much longer than the shorter version.  If you are under 5'9" you probably want to opt for the shorter style.  This was almost too long for the look I wanted.  Rounding out my simple ensemble were my old glitter flats and my awesome Betsey necklace.

Overall, I really loved this and look forward to this style of dress in more fun patterns.  It is super comfortable and can definitely transition between seasons with added accessories.
