What I Wore: It's a (Faux) Wrap!

I hope you said the title of this post like Admiral Ackbar.  :-)

Sean and I finally had a chance to go out on a date this month.  It has been long overdue.  We also had a Groupon to spend at our local movie theater.  Before we went to see Looper, we ate some yummy seafood.  It was so nice to just relax and have a fun evening that did not involve checking things off of our endless To Do List.

Our evening did not require me to be more dressed up than usual, but I really wanted to put in the effort to look purty and get dolled up.  Enter the Harlow Faux Wrap Dress by Kiyonna.  I've had my eye on this dress since I first came across Kiyonna's website last year.  The cut of the skirt and closer fit are a little outside of my comfort zone, but I really wanted to try it out.

I felt a little self-conscious when I first tried it on.  However, I quickly warmed up to the silhouette and felt sassy in no time!  Three-quarter sleeves are my favorite length.  With this dress being a faux wrap, I didn't have to worry about any wardrobe malfunctions.  Having never owned a wrap dress before, it has always been a worry of mine.  This was a great way for me to stick my toe in the water, I suppose.

The sash is sewn to the dress on the side, so all you have to do is tie it.  It isn't a fussy dress you have to constantly fidget with.  I stuck with basic black accessories to keep things simple.  I'm so happy with this dress and the way I felt in it!

  1. I like that color much better in your pictures than I do on Kiyonna's website...and thanks for clarifying about the sash part. Because I was sorta eyeing that dress, but I hate belts that come all the way off, they just don't ever lay right on me! I might have to get the black & white flowers with the red sash. I wish the red one had a black sash....sigh. (That's how I feel about a lot of Kiyonna's stuff lately, it's like I like certain styles, but they don't come in the colors I want, and the only tops that have the cool prints are ones that don't lay right on me. I love that peplum top, but pink is bad on me and I have enough shit that's black and gray. I'm HOPING they come out with some tops in that pretty hunter green.....) PS, wrap dresses aren't really any worse than any other skirts for wardrobe malfunctions....they generally are pretty secure and have enough overlap that there's no worry, and it's not any worse for the girls getting unruly than any other low-cut tops.

  2. I think this dress is really flattering on you, and the color is great, too. I'm surprised you say you wear a 4X! But I guess that's the beauty of great plus size designs. If they're cut and made well, they can look great on any body type and size. I can't believe i learned so late about Kiyonna, Igigi, Simply Be, etc...but better late than never! It's empowering and a self-esteem booster for sure to know I have options and can find styles that I feel awesome wearing. I've yet to order from Kiyonna, but I'm getting more and more tempted!

  3. Safety pins are a life saver with actual wrap dresses, the bonus is that you can adjust them if you gain or lose weight--just one of those awesome little features, I love wrap tops for the same reason. Just have to make sure to move a lot in front of the mirror so if there is a problem you can take care of it before it becomes a problem publicly ;)

Why were you self-conscious? You look so fantastic in this dress, it hugs you just so and I love the accessories. Head to toe you're owning your title of "divne mrs diva".

  5. Hey there! I like the brighter blue color too. I love that about their purple stuff as well. The purples tend to be brighter in person than online. The sash is sewn on on the side and then there is a small loop on the opposite side near the tying of the sash. It drooped a little bit after a couple hours, but I also didn't tie it in a knot or anything. I just looped it like the Kiyonna video tutorial for sash tying.

Oh, I love that peplum top too. I wish it came in that beautiful turquoise of the Smitten lace top. I want more teals from them, but that hunter green is gorgeous too.

I have a wrap top from Queen Grace I haven't worn yet. It's a true wrap style. I should give it a go. I can't wait to try a true wrap dress and see how it does. :-)

  6. Oh, do let me know what you decide on when you do buy from them. I honestly have yet to try something from them I don't like. It is all made so well. It is such a wonderful feeling to put something on and feel so sassy and beautiful in it. Thank goodness for the internet or I would never know about all these amazing companies either! And thank you for the compliment!

  7. Oh, I'm excited about trying a true wrap style now. It seems like it would be comfortable and mostly easy to wear. Sean knows Boy Scout knots. He could tie it for me I suppose lol

Aw, thanks, lady. Well, I was really self-conscious because I don't usually wear a dress so fitted to me. I mean, it fit well, but it was a closer fit than I am used to. It is one thing to wear a fitted skirt and a top that isn't too clingy, but with a dress it is just all there. lol It didn't take too long before I started feeling more confident in it though. It is good to push my boundaries a little now and then.

  9. Rest assured, you look great in this dress. The fit, the color, the whole package is just right.

As to the boy scout knots, lol, careful, you want to be able to get out of it eventually ;)
