What I Wore: Purple Power

A couple weeks ago, Mr. Diva and I went to our new favorite comedy club, the Helium Comedy Club, to see Patton Oswalt.  It was a much-needed night of laughter.  If you follow me on Instagram, you already know we had great seats (and that I love the club decor!).

I had a cocktail called a Pineapple Upside Down Cake that was delicious.  Next time we go, I need to write the ingredients down and try to make it at home.  Off the top of my head, I can tell you it had Amaretto, pineapple juice, and orange juice in it.  The club also serves this tasty, cheesy mushroom dip with buttery little toasts for dipping.  I know it is thoroughly unhealthy, but indulging now and then is okay.

Patton was hilarious, trying out some new material and talking to the audience.  He does such a great job when talking to the crowd.

It was a rather warm day, so I wanted to stay cool and be (of course) cute at the same time.  I bought this purple version of the Kiyonna Trina Top and couldn't wait to wear it.  It is definitely a more true purple in person than it shows on the website.  I own this top in blue as well, so you know I love it.  The material is so soft and comfortable.  The sleeves are just how I like them.  I feel it is such a flattering style. (I want to collect them all! I still need green and black :-)

Trina Top - Kiyonna
Denim Capris - Penningtons (picked them up last summer)
Sandals - Avenue (from Spring 2011, I believe)
Necklace - Lane Bryant (Similar here)
Bracelets - Have had them forever

I didn't use garment tape on the boobage this time because we were in a hurry, so I had a few issues with that.  As I've stated before, I am a very small-busted plus-size woman (I'm barely a B), so I do tend to have issues with the bust of all tops.  If you have larger breasts, this won't be an issue for you.  Still, it wasn't that big of a deal to me.

All in all, it was a great night.  I can't wait to go back!  It seems like they have a lot of big name comedians quite often.  Laughter is the best medicine, right?

Do y'all like makeup photos?  I was proud of my eyeshadow that night.  Among other things, I used Urban Decay's Stardust eyeshadows in 54 and Retrograde.

  1. You are beautiful. And you don't have to apologize for what you eat! There's nothing wrong with eating food and liking it. If people choose to not eat certain things or lose weight, that is their prerogative...their bodies are their business. Your body is yours. If anyone gives you crap about what you're eating, just noisily enjoy it and take some more closeups.

(Note: I don't believe in rubbing things in anyone's face, or policing anyone's food choices, or any of that, but if someone starts in with his/her food "rules" in an effort to shame me into eating something else, that just pushes my "rebel" button.)

  2. PS-I'm a C-D ish (depending) and I have problems with the cleavage factor on the stuff I've bought from Kiyonna. Perhaps "cleavage" is the wrong word, since I don't really have any...."bra showing" would be more accurate, heh. I like their stuff, but I don't like that all of it is like "OH HAI LOOK AT MY BOOBS"

  3. You know, I didn't even realize that I was doing that until you said something. I do feel bad for enjoying food sometimes. I think it is another habit my mother bestowed upon me because none of my reactions to food was good enough for her. She hated that I was fat and made sure I knew it.
If I was too excited about dinner (and HUNGRY), she would say I was an elephant or a pig. If I acted more subdued so I wouldn't get called names, she would make a HUGE deal about how I didn't sound like "a herd of elephants coming into the kitchen". She'd keep asking me if I was feeling okay and would touch my forehead constantly to see if I had a fever to mock me.

Thank you for pointing that out because I really never connected those two things before. I will work on my food guilt. :-)

  4. Is it because they are lower cut v-necklines that you have that issue? I find that the items in the jersey knit are easier manipulated to lay like I want them and cover what I want them too. I guess I'm just feeling boob awkward lately. Maybe I need a better push-up bra. lol

  5. It's one of those things that I've had to learn to do, over time. My mom didn't call me names, but she's like 5' even and not fat...but spent her whole life CALLING herself fat. I've been bigger than she is since like 5th grade. (My dad is a big guy.) I finally called her out on it a year or so ago and told her that she could do whatever she wanted but quit with the "oh I was so bad" routine and quit with the "I'm fat" bullshit too. She's a little bigger than she used to be, but she's still far from actually being fat. She's been better about it since then. She's at least moved on to self-flagellating over not exercising, Heh.

If you've never read any of the stuff out there on fat acceptance, it's definitely worth a read. It gives you a different perspective on things, and some solid advice on how to deal with assholes. There's a fat-fashion community on LIveJournal (Fatshionista) that has links elsewhere, and is also a great writer on this topic (and many others).

  6. Kind of - I have the Maggie dress and the Backstage Dolman Top, and they both require cami-type action. I *can* go without, but then I'm messing with it all day, and I hate that. I also ordered the Melrose top, but it was icky. Very itchy and TIGHT. It sort of was like built-in shapewear, and the ruching made it look ok, but it was not comfortable at all. I got a 4x in all 3, and the other two things fit fine. (The Maggie is my favorite. I don't like the sleeves on the dolman top. Also, the teal color is way darker in person than it looks on the website. It's pretty, but dark. I wanted the blue, but they were out in my size. ><) I like a few of the things on their site now, but they all look so HOT. I actually e-mailed them about that...they wrote back, the person I e-mailed with was really nice, and she said they might have some more hot-weather stuff later this summer. I hope so! Otherwise, I'll just wait till fall and order some more of the dresses in the Maggie fabric, I love that it doesn't wrinkle no matter how hard you try!

  7. I LOVE my Maggie! I wish I bought the purple one too. One of my favorite dresses ever! Have you tried the Abby twist top? It is that same material. It still may be a little low cut, but I didn't feel too exposed in mine. I have the animal print Abby. It has the flutter sleeves, so they keep you cool but also offer a nice coverage. They aren't too short.
I just received the Backstage Dolman in the pinky coral color and wore it Saturday. (Pics soon!) It was really low cut, so I definitely wore a tank underneath. I liked the way it looked though. The sleeves are a bit outside my comfort zone, but they weren't too bad to me. I can't wait to see what else they come out with!

  8. I called my mom out on her stuff last year, but she denied all of it and said I was a liar. It's one of the reasons she doesn't speak to me now. I'm really, really glad your mom has been a little better.

I've read a little bit on fat acceptance. It is definitely something I want to learn more about, just to be open to those ideas if nothing else. I have to be careful though because I don't want to get too angry or belligerent. I follow some FA people on Twitter, and while I appreciate their views and often agree with them, sometimes I just get really pissed off and cranky. lol I hope that makes sense. I will check out that LJ community though.

  9. I may order the Abby soon. I need a black shirt to go with some stuff (the one that was my go-to is broken), and I'm debating between the Caylee and the Abby....I think I may go with the Abby, though, because I like the sleeves better.
