My latest Afternoon Live segment is now online!! While I don't have a huge post to go along with it, I wanted to make sure to get it on the blog ASAP.

I chose the topic of making use of summer dresses in the colder months.  I've been pushing myself more to utilize the tips I shared in the segment because I also want to be able to wear my summer dresses all year round and make use of my wardrobe.  Often times we get stuck in our ways, which includes wearing items in our closet only one way and never branching out to try new things.  It is really important to push yourself out of your comfort zone once in a while (in fashion and in life) to challenge your ways of thinking and learn more about yourself.  I find the times I push myself or challenge myself to be incredibly educational times of growth.  The more you try new clothing on (JUST TRY IT ON!), the more you learn about yourself, your likes and dislikes, and what works for your body.

Check out my segment below, with tips for a positive try-on session, and a few blog examples of layering summer dresses.

- I purchased the items in this post. All opinions presented are my own and without influence. -
Before we get started, I am 5'9", typically wear a 22/24, wear a 40B bra, a size 11 wide shoe, and my measurements are 52/49/58.

If trying on clothes is a negative experience for you, one in which you leave feeling bad about your body, I will reiterate my tips for a healthy try on session.

  • Go into this as an experiment.  Some clothes will work and some will not.  You will not like everything and that is okay.  This is an experiment.  You are just trying things to see what they look like on your specific body.
  • Clothes not fitting you correctly is not an indication of your worth, value, or beauty.  All clothing is not made the same.  Each company and brand has their own way of sizing.  I can wear anywhere from a size 16 to a 26.  Those numbers are not a reflection of anything, other than being a guide for helping me find things that fit me.
  • Your body is not the problem.  DO NOT stand in that dressing room and talk shit to yourself about what you see as less than.  DO NOT make disparaging comments about your body.  DO NOT call yourself names.  DO NOT poke, prod, or mentally/verbally abuse yourself.  This takes practice.  We are conditioned to hate ourselves from birth, y'all.  Fight those negative feelings and focus on the things you like.  With practice comes a more positive and peaceful mindset.  Trust me.  It is work and it is exhausting, but changing those negative self-deprecating habits is totally worth it.
  • Try on everything!  Try on things you think look dumb along with the things that look great.  Try on colors you hate just as much as colors you love.  Try on things that look terrible on the hanger, and definitely try on things that look great from the get-go.  Try on all of it!  I learn so much about myself and my body when I try on the things I think I won't like or won't look good on me.  And 9 times out of 10, I end up liking whatever it is.
  • Remember, this isn't about contorting your body to fit into clothing.  You are paying for this clothing, so it needs to work for you.  This is about finding the pieces that work for your shape specifically.  It isn't about you being somehow flawed or wrong.

While I have been practicing these tips in real life, some just haven't made it on the blog.  My favorite way to layer summer dresses has been with the vest/leggings/boots combo, but tying and knotting a shirt over a dress is quickly becoming my new go-to.  Here are a few looks below as examples of how I've worn some summer dresses in the colder months and implemented some of the tips I talked about in the segment:
