State of the House

I'm still unpacking.  We actually have a deadline since we will be hosting Bunco at the end of the month.  Truly, I am sick of it - more like bored with it.  There are just a million other things I would rather be doing right now.  (Like posting to the blog on a regular basis.) This week, I have really been pushing myself to work on unpacking.  It is pretty much all I have been doing.  So I thought I would update you all on my progress and show some pictures of the reality here at Diva Manor.

There was so much prep work involved in getting the kitchen ready - before I even opened any boxes - that I am just sick of looking at it.  I try to get at least a little bit done every day, but I've had stressed out moments of being unsure exactly where to store canned goods or mixing bowls and I just stop.   One of the cabinets has probably been reorganized about five times because I keep changing my mind about where to put things.  I just see all the stuff sitting on the dining room floor and get overwhelmed.  I've already gotten rid of a lot of stuff though.

So my kitchen still looks like this:

Believe it or not, it is a great improvement.  All of Sean's tools and tape and screwdrivers and lightbulbs and wires and metal thingies and whatchamacallits are off the counters.  All the kitchen boxes have been emptied and all the glasses are in the cabinet.  Half of what you can't see is organized. The other half is scattered everywhere, including the dining room.

This is a friggin' mess.  I emptied all of the kitchen boxes all over the floor here, grouping everything by purpose.  The shelving was supposed to act as storage since this house doesn't have a pantry, but it just isn't working out the way I envisioned it.  That fact has made me pretty frustrated too.  The way I saw it in my head, it was mostly concealed storage and displayed decorative items.  I just don't see that happening anytime soon.

The front room still houses boxes of sheets, pillows, blankets, artwork, and some stuff that is supposed to somehow fit in the dining room.

I haven't even started on the craft room yet.  I basically just went up there to move some keepsakes containers around and get my New Kids area set aside.  I can't even worry about it at the moment.

My favorite room in the house right now is my dressing room.  It is the most "done" of the rooms, even though I still have shelves to organize and stuff to put away.  I am going to wait until it is mostly set before I do a big reveal on the blog, but here is a little sneak peek:

Labor Day weekend afforded us an extra day to work on house things, so Sean bought some sliding shelves for under the kitchen cabinet.  It definitely helps organize a bit of the chaos.  He had to saw off the middle shelf before installing them, but I think he did a terrific job.  Down the road when we remodel the kitchen, we will definitely get more of these things.

This has been my State of the House Address.  We are devoting the entire weekend to unpacking and  organizing.  Hopefully we can make a dent in every room of the house before Monday rolls around!

  1. The dressing room looks truly fantastic, I'm excited about the big reveal!

As to the rest, it'll get there. I imagine it's a slow process for anyone when they move, I mean you're relocating everything from your daily life, even things you normally don't think about. It's going to be tough. What I do when I have a lot to get done is give myself regular breaks. Work for an hour, get 20 minutes to do something I want to do (messing with wire jewelry, a game of chess, etc), work for an hour...and so on. That way I don't go too crazy or burn myself out before I'm done.

    Hang in there!

  2. Congratulations on the new place! The kitchen is just darling! What fun to redecorate and organize a new place! Okay, maybe exhausting too! But super fun! ;)

  3. Once the boxes are gone and things have been sorted and organized, when I can start hanging pictures and doing craft projects for decor, it will be super fun. I loved your gallery wall Pinterest board. I have way more wall space now (and we have lots of artwork), so I will be gallery walling like crazy! lol

  4. Hmm, maybe I do need to take more breaks. I usually push and push myself for hours until I am just sick of looking at all of it and I get frustrated. I think the other thing taking so long is that we didn't have extra time to sort through what we wanted to keep and get rid of as we packed. Even all the stuff I set aside for garbage and Goodwill somehow ended up getting packing and brought to the new place.
It is just frustarting, Plus, I am a bit of a pack rat since I moved around so much as I kid and always had to get rid of things I loved. I hold on to things more tightly, so it is a HUGE deal for me to let anything go. I've gotten a little bit better at it in the last few years, but I still have lots of stuff. lol The kitchen and dining room are almost done as far as organizing goes (at least for the time being), so things are looking up. Maybe I can start making dinner next week!
