I've recently brought you reviews of two pieces from the Her Universe Outlander collection that came out this month. Her Universe was kind enough to send me the Mackenzie Tartan Cinch Dress and Thistle Flyaway Cardigan, but I purchased the Tartan Buckle Skirt and the Clan Fraser Jersey on my own. (Because I LOVE Outlander and I couldn't help myself...)
This tartan skirt is steadily selling out, so I wanted to go ahead and bring you the review this week as well. I stepped out of my fashion comfort zone and opted for colored tights with this look, so let me know what you think!
- I bought the items in this post. All opinions presented are my own and without influence. This post contains affiliate links and I make a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

Before we get started, I am 5'9", typically wear a 22/24, wear a 40B bra, a size 11 wide shoe, and my measurements are 52/49/58.
If you love these Outlander collections as much as I do, you may remember a similar skirt that Torrid released in their 2016 collection. I reviewed that tartan skirt on the blog after I wore it to the Portland Highland Games. Both skirts are the same style, but the tartan on the Her Universe skirt is an Outlander tartan, while the Torrid skirt is a Fraser tartan. The only other noticeable differences are the more decorative buckles on the Torrid piece and the waistband thistle logo on the Her Universe number.
As of the publishing of this post, the Her Universe Tartan Buckle Skirt I am wearing is still available on the Her Universe site in a size 4 (24/26 & the size I am wearing) & on the Hot Topic website in sizes 1 (14/16), 3 (22/24), 4 (24/26), & 5 (26/28).
As I usually do with collections and Her Universe and Hot Topic-related clothing, I sized up. I'm wearing this skirt in a 4 (24/26) and feel that was a good choice. The waist is a little loose if I wear it higher than my natural waist, but otherwise it is a great fit. The Torrid skirt has always been a little snug on me and I have gained weight in Quarantine, so I don't think the size 3 (22/24) would have been the best choice.
The fabric is a woven material with no stretch. It wrinkles more easily (not as easily as rayon, mind you), but that wasn't a huge issue for me. There is no elastic in the waist, but it does have a zip closure on the side. I particularly love the ruffled back of the skirt that gives it a flirty movement. It hits just above the knee, so I think the proportion of it works well on my body. I am 5'9" for reference.
The top is a combo I was gifted by Catherines back in 2015 for their denim campaign that year. The burgundy tank and green lace tee make a pretty pair. They both complement the colors in the skirt very well, and I love the texture the lace adds to the ensemble. And I finally found a place to wear these heeled boots! They are from the most recent Torrid Outlander collection. The boots are way more comfy than I anticipated, and such a cute style. Initially, I was going to pass on these, but I am so glad I didn't. (And I don't have to lace them every time. They have a side zip!)
