The biggest DIY project for the Bedroom Makeover was this fairy-inspired canopy I designed. I had this vision in my head of a fantastical, whimsical canopy with hanging vines and crystals, like a fairy collected things to adorn her space. Even though I started out not knowing exactly how to create it, the finished canopy looks just as I imagined.
I'm really excited to share it with you!

I've wanted a canopy in my bedroom since I was a little girl, but it never happened for me then. In thinking of nature and forest inspiration for this bedroom redo, I thought about my favorite trees and what I love about them. I adore the long, drooping branches of willow trees and hanging Spanish moss on oaks. It makes me feel embraced and enchanted, which led me to the look of this canopy.
The hardest part was figuring out the best way to secure the curtains to the mossy grapevine wreath base, while keeping them supported and level all the way around. Each curtain layer is on its own chain ring. (I ended up needing three of these steel chain packages.) The grey mosquito net layer has three panels, while the fairy light layer is one nine-foot light curtain. The leafy layer is also three panels, though looking closer shows you that the back panel is slightly different. At first, that was just my mistake ordering two different ones, but I decided to use the more defined panel in the back to give some depth to the look of the canopy. The side panels are a bit more sheer and not as detailed in comparison.

To begin this process, I looped raw edge velvet ribbon, cut in varying lengths, around the wreath. This ribbon is MESSY AF, so do this outside if you can. Otherwise, have a vacuum and sticky roller at hand. This part didn't require hot glue as I just pulled the ribbon tightly to secure it.
Then I added crystal strands at varying lengths around the wreath. The little loop at the end of the strand was enough to secure it to branches in the grapevine wreath. Even though I knew the back of the canopy wouldn't be seen, I mostly decorated it all the way around, though the back quarter of the wreath is more sparse. I found the gold, beaded tassel garland in our stuff from some previous bedroom decor and decided to weave that around the wreath as well.

After that, I used hot glue to adhere the hanging moss branches and fuzzy ferns to the wreath. It was looking a little plain in the front (to me) and needed some extra pizzazz, so I draped more crystal strands and added larger ferns as I sort of tiara. Then I went back again and added more ferns to the front, which I think was the missing element. I also wanted that extra coverage in the front to hide the chain.

It hung up easily, so I just had to fluff the curtain and unwind the light strands. I left them in a spiral in between the layers because I don't need them to go all the way to the floor. The copper wire holds its shape well, so I haven't had to fuss with it. I'm also very happy that I went with a light curtain that changes colors. I love how it changes the vibe of the room in such a simple way.
