What I Wore: Alexa Crowe-Inspired

When I came across the show My Life Is Murder on Acorn TV, I was excited to dive into this Australian murder mystery show starring Lucy Lawless.  Lucy plays Alexa Crowe, a fearless private investigator who helps with all kinds of cases.  She's intelligent and sarcastic, loves a good loaf of bread, and has a colorful yet practical wardrobe that I've been admiring.

So I decided to put together a fun Alexa Crowe-inspired outfit that I wore out to drinks and dinner with friends!

Before we get started, I am 5'9", typically wear a 22/24, wear a 40B bra, a size 11 wide shoe, and my measurements are 52/49/58.

As I said, I love Alexa's colorful and practical wardrobe.  She's not being someone she's not.  She's not wearing heels just because.  She's not showing a lot of skin, but she's still confident and sexy and owns her power.  There are so many shows where the female characters are forced into short skirts and high heels for completely impractical reasons.  Mostly I see this in American shows.  So when I started obsessively watching British crime dramas, I was so excited by the more practical clothing the characters wore.

Alexa's partner in murder-solving is Madison, played by Ebony Vagulans, who also has a seriously great character closet of bright colors, prints, and textures.  I so wish I could hang out with these two!

In putting together an Alexa Crowe look, I kept the formula of wide-leg pants, a more conservative top with interest, a long trench, and boots.  It's that simple.  But these newer teal and purple pieces I own really called to me as the colorful portion of the look.  I LOVE this soft, ribbed knit top from Torrid.  I was a little worried about how clingy it might be as ribbed knits often are.  However, this one is more fitted than I am used to but doesn't cling.  I felt comfortable in it and love the zipper for changing up the neckline.

I like to take the neckline as low as I am comfortable with to open up the area closest to my face.  I think it just suits me better (and a lower neckline makes me feel pretty).  I added a matching cami for extra interest.  I also LOVE a longer jacket or coat, especially on a man!  Y'all, it's like a boyband dream to me.  I found this purple one at Lane Bryant, though I was hesitant to purchase it because it doesn't have a closure of any kind.  It is gathered in the back to give some shape, so I let the closure issue take a back seat since I love the color so much too.

Bootcut jeans have made a comeback, which makes me happy.  I used to ONLY wear bootcut before I finally gave in to skinny jeans, so sometimes it seems like a lot of extra fabric and sometimes it doesn't.  But I do feel that the bootcut silhouette balances out my thick thighs and voluptuous hips so they don't completely overwhelm any who decide to look. (wink wink. I'm making jokes.)  And I'm finally wearing my impractical pandemic purchase of Rockport boots, which are so comfy!

I decided to try one of these heatless curl sets too.  It tends to turn out a little different each time I use it, so I haven't quite gotten the hang of it yet.  Still, it doesn't do too bad.  The second time I attempted it, it actually turned out perfect!  Thankfully, it was for my latest Her Universe Outlander shoot, so you've already seen it here on the blog.  Look at that hair to see the full potential of this thing!  (You can get more Amazon recommendations via my Amazon Store Front!)
