KATU Afternoon Live: Layering Tips For Fall

I was back on KATU's Afternoon Live, via Zoom, to share my layering tips for fall!  Layering helps get more use out of our wardrobes and gives us a little more help in controlling our comfort level temperature-wise.  I find that so many stores turn their heat way up in the fall/winter so that I am sweating if I am in the store for more than ten minutes.  I'm always glad I layered!

These days, many of us are not going out to stores that often, or leaving the house much at all.  I live in the Pacific Northwest where we can't even walk outside and breathe the air right now.  But whether we are staying in or going out, we all need to wear clothes.  And I still believe in the power of clothing to make one feel good about themselves, to change one's outlook for the day, and to help express our personalities.

Enjoy the segment and let me know your favorite layering techniques!

Before we get started, I am 5'9", typically wear a 22/24, wear a 40B bra, a size 11 wide shoe, and my measurements are 52/49/58.

Featured In The Video
What I Wore

  • Black Floral Challis Zip Front Drawstring Shirt Dress - Torrid
  • Plum Crisscross Foxy Cami - Torrid
    • These camis are very stretchy and strong and fitted.  I always size up one size to a 4X.  I generally wear some type of cami under everything I wear.  They can just smooth the line of my tummy a bit, help my clothes not cling, or help me stay a bit warmer, depending on what type I'm wearing that day.
  • Rhinestone Hoop Earrings - eBay seller IrisIsland

Look #1

  • Crew Elbow Sleeve  - Halftee
    • Get 15% off your first purchase of $25 or more using my referral link!
    • I can wear a 4X or 5X in Halftee styles.  This one is a 5X, and I like that it is fitted but not tight. There is still comfort and room for my larger upper arms.
  • Zip Front Drawstring Shirt Dress - Torrid
    • Black version still available
    • I LOVE the knit fabric of this dress.  I bought both the olive and black versions.
  • Long Cardigan - Lane Bryant

Look #2

  • Denim Jacket - Yours Clothing
    • A denim jacket is always a staple.  As mentioned in the video, what color you choose is totally up to you and what works with your wardrobe.  I do prefer a dark or medium wash because I feel those colors offer the most versatility.
    • People always ask about trends, but you can still be fashionable or look put-together without being trendy.  What's trendy doesn't matter to me.  I want to dress in what makes me feel good and makes me feel like myself.  If that criteria ends up being on-trend at the moment, it means it is way easier for me to find items I enjoy! (Like off-the-shoulder tops in summer, plaid & sequins in fall and winter, certain colors or color combinations depending on the season, etc.)
  • Relaxed Scoop-Neck Jersey Henley Tee - Old Navy
    • Old Navy is notoriously inconsistent with fit. Most henleys I have tried from the brand are clingy and I have to size up. I ordered this one in a 3X and it fits like a comfy tee. The long-sleeved rib-knit henleys are great layering pieces, but I had to size up to a 4X in those.
  • Burgundy Purple Plaid Button-Front Suspender Skirt - Torrid
    • This skirt has removable suspenders, which I think is a cute look.  Plaid is ALWAYS in style, but easier to find in the fall and winter.
    • A few other plaid skirt styles available: 1, 2, 3, 4
  • I also touched on tights for this look.  I find leggings and tights are great layers for skirt and dress ensembles for fall and winter.  I generally just wear an active legging for more casual looks and ones in which I am wearing my tall boots.  But tights are great for a dressier look or adding more color and texture to your outfit.
    • I love my Catherines Super Opaque tights.
    • We Love Colors has a HUGE variety of colors and textures!  Most of their plus-size offerings only seem to go up to a size 22/24, and maybe 26.  The Microfiber Nylon/Lycra Tights go up to a size 8X.
    • Snag Tights is another company with a variety of options for plus size.  I've bought a few pairs from them and shipping was relatively quick.  Snag goes up to a size 32.  While Snag doesn't have the immense range of colors that We Love Colors has, they do have a handful of colors for most styles they carry.

Look #3

  • There is nothing wrong with basic neutrals like black, white, beige, grey. and even navy.  But if you would like to wear something with a bit more color or just something different, think on what your "unexpected neutral" would be!  What color do you see a lot of in your wardrobe?  Or, what's a color that complements the shades of your wardrobe?  What are your favorite colors? Whatever your answer, look for basics and layering pieces in shades of this color.  For example, I have a lot of really colorful pieces in my wardrobe, along with some solid pieces, but I find that plum and burgundy shades complement most of the pieces in my closet that I could mix and match layering pieces with.  When I need to buy other layering options like tees and hoodies, I keep in mind my plum and burgundy neutrals.
  • Benton Springs Fleece Vest in Black Cherry - Columbia
    • At the higher end of a size 22/24, I'm lucky this vest fits me. Columbia's plus size women's items are slightly small overall.  I own some hiking pants and capris that work well for me in a 24.  I also own the jacket version of this fleece vest, and I have a couple thermal tops that are a bit oversized in a 3X.
    • This vest is a 3X and is fitted when zipped, but not too tight or clingy.  It's a great warm layer and has come in handy for chillier climates.
  • Vintage Pullover Hoodie in Tie-Dye - Old Navy
    • I bought this hoodie style in a 3X even though I thought I should have sized up.  When it arrived, it turned out to be a great fit! It isn't so generously sized that I feel sloppy, but I still have room to move in it.
  • Purple Striped Tee - Maurices
    • I love the 24/7 Collection tees as light layers under vests and the like. They usually come in lots of color combos and are carried at Maurices all year round.

Look #4

  • Ava & Viv Anorak Jacket - Target
    • I am wearing a 3X, but if you have larger upper arms and/or want to wear heavier tops underneath - size up!
  • Lambswool Stole - Bought in Scotland
    • Heritage of Scotland is having a big warehouse sale right now.  I've bought a couple more stoles that I wish I bought while in Scotland, but shipping has been taking a long time. Just FYI.
  • Brooches, enamel pins, stick pins, vintage pieces, old earrings turned into pins - have fun with adding these little accessories to your look on your vest, jacket, hats, handbags, scarves, etc.!
