Season 6 of Outlander is right around the corner!  I love to make the premiere an event, even if it is just my husband and I celebrating by ourselves.  I make a meal from the Outlander Kitchen Cookbook and wear something inspired by the show.  So when March 6th rolls around, imagine me dressed in this cute Mackenzie Tartan Dress from Her Universe!

That's right, Her Universe just introduced a new Outlander-inspired collection, featuring six pieces you can check out now!  They sent me this tartan dress, which I am so excited about it, and I bought the cardigan and button-down top that I'll show you once they arrive.

I also want to add that I did shoot this look on two separate occasions because I was really critical of the first photos when I probably didn't need to be, but I'm glad I have shots in different lighting situations.

The dress comes in sizes XS to 5X, which translates to sizes 0 through 26/28.  The "regular" sizes 1X to 3X run a bit more junior, but the actual plus sizes are more true to women's sizing.  I'm wearing a plus size 3 and find it to be just a tad snug in the waist.  The fabric is a cotton, woven fabric with a great texture to it, but absolutely no stretch.  While the 3 was completely doable for me, I went ahead and purchased a plus size 4 to compare the fit.  The lacing in the back was helpful for me to cinch in the bust a little bit (because I do have a smaller bust), so I was happy about that.  There does seem to be a bit of extra room under the armpit because of my smaller bust, so cinching it in helped with the overall look.





There is a side zipper that helped in getting the dress on and off, and while the waist area was a bit tight on me, it wasn't uncomfortable.  I like the way the fitted area looks and the shape and silhouette it gives me.  The length was also pretty great for me, stopping right above the knee.  The wide straps ensure you can still wear a supportive bra should you want to go sleeveless.  I will also add the fabric wrinkles very easily, so you are just going to have to be okay with that when you wear it.

All that said, I absolutely LOVE this dress!!  I think it is a really versatile piece beyond just having an Outlander influence.  It would be great for cottage core and academia aesthetics.  I've since had some other ideas on styling that I hope to implement soon.

When I styled this piece, I really called in a sort of Outlander meets academia vibe.  The top is a poofy-sleeved poet blouse from Oldy Navy that felt so perfect for this look.  I've been buying some of the Old Navy poet blouses in a variety of colors for my costuming collection, so I was thrilled to put this one to use.  I also added teal tights from Snag Tights to stay warm, because it is still relatively cold outside.  The color is called Blueberry Muffin, but it matches the blue in the Mackenzie tartan very well. 

Next, I chose my trusty Comfortiva oxfords and an it-almost-matches cable knit cropped sweater from Fashion To Figure.  The brown of the thrifted messenger bag perfectly ties in the shoes and faux amber earrings (Dragonfly In Amber, anyone?)  And last but not least, I donned my Standing Stones necklace that I picked up in Scotland at the Culloden Battlefield.  It is by Hamilton and Young, a company that makes a variety of Outlander-inspired jewelry!  Of course, I also wore my Outlander ring, which I wear pretty much every day anyway.
