I hope you all are surviving the holiday countdown!  In today's post, I am sharing this look that I wore out on a date night with Sean.  We saw Chris Hardwick at the local comedy club and went out to dinner.  It was such a fun night and the best comedy club experience we have had to date!  I will share what happened to us during the show at the end of the post.

Before we get to that though, I am reviewing this sweater from Lane Bryant and boots by Comfortiva.  Enjoy!

Before we get started, I am 5'9", typically wear a 22/24, wear a 40B bra, and my measurements are 52/49/58.

Instead of buying lots of gifts for each other, Sean and I typically hit up Black Friday deals for things we want.  Some of these items might be placed under the tree for later.  I made a list of specific types of items I didn't have in my closet to see what I could find during all the sales.  This wine-hued sweater was down to $20, so I decided to buy it.  I don't have too many long-sleeved options in my closet and have been more susceptible to cold as of late.  I love the burgundy color of the sweater and the lace-up detail at the neckline.

I purchased the Ribbed Lace-Up Hacci Top in a size 22/24.  I feel it is pretty true to size, though one could size up for a more oversized look.  I do wear a cami underneath the top to smooth out my tummy a bit.  The top is still available in black and grey on the website.  While it is called a "top", it feels more like a soft sweater to me, though it isn't super thick.  The rayon/spandex fabric is stretchy and very comfortable to wear.  This works really well for my personal taste because I am always hot in businesses and at other people's homes during the winter.

I like the slightly longer length, but the arms are a bit short.  I tend to pull them down a bit when it is chilly out, or you can push them up if they are bugging you.  I was wearing this top when I went into the Lane Bryant store the other day.  One of the employees said she also had the same issue with the arms being shorter than she would like.  As you can see in the photos, it isn't a huge deal, but if things like that bug you than you should definitely know about it.  I've worn this top quite a few times in the last few weeks.  It is comfortable and easy to throw on for running errands.  Because of the thinner sweater-like material, I can wear any of my jackets with it as well.

I paired the top with my trusty dark wash, T3 skinny jeans from Lane Bryant.  I've had these a while, but it is still a style they carry.  I can usually wear them a handful of times before they stretch out in the legs, which is a bit longer wear than some of my other LB jeans.  The T3 is a stretchy, spandex panel that smooths the tummy out a bit.  My only complaint with them is that sometimes the double-button waistband can cut into my tummy roll and irritate my skin.  I either wear them when I know I won't be sitting down a lot (because that is when it can rub against my skin), or I make sure to wear a cami tucked in so the waistband cannot rub me directly.  The latter usually solves the problem.

For accessories, I donned my cool Dragon Eye Necklace I bought at Rose City Comic Con back in September.  I cannot find the name of the vendor anywhere.  I wore it to show some nerd cred because Chris Hardwick is also a huge nerd.   I've since worn it to some other nerdy events and received lots of compliments on it.

I also decided to wear my new Comfortiva Cascade Boots since it wasn't raining.  I haven't sprayed them with the protective waterproofing spray yet.  I have about five new pairs of shoes I need to spray as soon as I can.  I found the boots on Zulily recently.  A brown ankle boot was on my list of items I was looking for during Black Friday.  I wanted to have a different casual option other than sneakers for the winter.  Y'all know I am all about Comfortiva and Cobb Hill, so I decided to go ahead and buy them.  I couldn't find an 11 Wide anywhere else online, nor for a discounted price. These boots are regular $100, but I bought them for $60.  I was able to do the payment plan with Zulily where I paid half up front and half the following month.  While I do wish they had a little more arch support, I find them very comfortable.  I love the side zip that allows me to put them on rather quickly.  The aged leather look is really cool, but they also have a textured shimmery detailing at the heel and ankle that gives them a little something extra.  I still have issues with my ankle after rolling it last year, so I love how supportive these feel at the ankle.

Before I get into my story about our experience during Chris's set, I just wanted to show you the view from our seat and Sean's studded Yoda shirt, which is relevant for something that happens later. We've been going to Helium Comedy Club in Portland for a while now.  We love going to Helium because it is clean and nice and everyone has been really friendly.  I think the food and drinks are pretty good for a comedy club; and they have some really great comedians come through.  We’ve seen folks like Nicole Byer, Maria Bamford, Dave Chappelle, Marc Maron, Tracy Morgan, Chris Kattan, Patton Oswalt, Ron Funches, and a few others I’m sure.

It wasn't until recently that we started being seated at the very front, which can be very nerve-wracking depending on who the comic is.  They sat us in the front row this time and I was just excited to see Chris up close.  I like seeing facial expressions and all that, which is why we also sat up front for Cirque Du Soleil this year.  But we also know Chris does some crowd work, so it was exciting that he might talk to us.

During his set, he started talking to various folks in the front and giving them shit for a variety of reasons.  He’s funny, but he isn’t mean about it.  He came to us and asked Sean what he does for a living.  Sean was wearing his studded Yoda shirt and replied, “Can’t you tell by the shirt that I’m a computer programmer?”  They chatted for a minute and then Chris asked me what I do.

I said, "I am a Lifestyle Blogger", to which he and the whole audience laughed.  He said, “So basically that means you have social media, right?”  He was giving me shit and went on about that for a minute.  Then he asked what I write about on my blog.  I told him the three topics I usually tell folks that cover a wide range of what I talk about. I said, “Plus size fashion, travel, and I had thyroid cancer so I talk about that as well.”  His face kind of fell and there were various reactions from the crowd behind me.

Chris replied, “Oh my god, why didn’t you lead with that?  I would have told you how great it is that you are doing that and how brave you are and moved on to harass someone else.  Now I just feel like an asshole.”

His face just made me laugh so hard.  I couldn’t stop laughing at his reaction.  He was close to my face talking into the microphone and I just couldn't stop laughing.

He said, “Damnit, I was going on about how you just have social media, but I was a jerk. I hope you’re okay, please be okay, please say you’re okay.  Are you doing okay?”  He put the microphone in my face and I said “Yes”.   He made a WHEW gesture and the whole audience erupted in cheers behind me.  Chris said he was so happy I was doing well and sorry he gave me shit, essentially, and then kept doing his set.

So later on as he was wrapping up his set and getting ready to end the show, he started giving a group at the end of the stage a hard time about their drink choices and looking to see how much their bill was and how much they tipped the waitress.  Then he ended up saying that he had given the front row so much shit he was going to pay all of our tabs!!  We were not sure if he meant it or not, but we applauded like WOW, thanks!  And he did end up paying everyone’s tab.  Ours alone was $71 because we each had multiple drinks and got food since we hadn’t eaten since breakfast. We couldn't believe it.  It was such a super cool, unexpected thing.

After he reintroduced his opener, who came back on stage to do a funny song with him, he came over to Sean and felt on his Yoda shirt because the texture of the studs called to him.  He thought the shirt was really cool.  Sean made a joke about him feeling a little farther over and everyone laughed.  Then Chris said he thought my dragon eye necklace was "fucking rad".

He was leaning against the wall and just kind of wrapping things up when he looked at me and said, "Well, you look great!! I am really happy you are doing well and hope everything stays that way."  I thanked him and he came over and said I may as well give the blog a shout out and asked me the name of it.

“Discourse of a Divine Diva”, I replied into the microphone.

The crowd "Ooooohed" and the guy behind me said, “That’s a really good name!”  Chris agreed it was a great name .  He said, “I’m all for it.  You made a thing. I made a thing. You have to just create and do things you are passionate about.”  (He created the Nerdist Empire, by the way.)  This really struck me later on when I had time to think about it.  I’ve been going through a lot of frustration about the blog, some of which I have talked about here.  His words were a boost of morale to me and a reminder that I just have to keep doing what I love and be myself and keep keepin’ on.  I don't want all the other bullshit of being a blogger to become the dark cloud it has been lately.  So my goal for the new year is to try not to care about numbers and just create content that makes me happy.  I need to find time to work on all my other hobbies too, so I just don't want to be too hard on myself and beat myself up for things that shouldn't be an issue or are out of my control.

Chris and Mark did their song, Chris high-fived the whole front row, and then came over and gave me a hug before he left.  He told me again he was so happy I was okay. I told him thank you, and then he was gone.  It was just such a fun experience!!  We had such a blast and left so excited and buzzed about the amazing time we had at the show.

We were $71 richer than we would have been and still hungry, so we stopped at Gustav’s, our local German restaurant and the site of mine and Sean's first date, for a bite.  As soon as our waitress came over to introduce herself, she told me she thinks I am so, so pretty, so that was just like icing on the cake of a really great night out.  Who doesn’t love random compliments?

I should also add that I have been doing a winged liner look lately and people seem to respond to me in a much friendlier way.  Could it be the holidays?  Could it be that I am in a better mood so I am smiling more?  Could it be my anxiety has been a bit better lately so I see more positive things?  Sure, to all of these.  But it just might be the winged liner, y'all.

  1. What a cool experience! I know Hardwick from Talking Dead and he always seems like such a genuinely kind, fun person. Great memories for you and Sean. And your nerd cred totally worked out haha.

    1. Yes! He always seems like such a great guy. We've seen him do stand-up once before and it is refreshing to just see someone be themselves. He's a class act! It was such a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime experience!! :-)
