During one of my recent shopping trips to Catherines, prior to my run as their May Style Ambassador, I tried on lots of dresses in various styles and colors. While I found a ton of items I thought were fabulous, I was still drawn to the maxis more than anything. Maxis have been a common recurrence on the blog lately as I've posted four in the last month. But I mean it when I say that they are a summer staple and an easy way to look pulled together, stylish, and feel comfortable with very little effort.
Initially, I was drawn to this maxi for the pink and coral color combo. I wear lots of pink and coral lipstick and had recently picked up this pink and orange iridescent necklace from Dressbarn that I knew would go so well with this dress. Sometimes I am wary of the high-low silhouette, though I usually end up liking it once I try it on. This dress definitely fell into that category!
The wide straps, v-neckline, and empire waist make it pretty universally flattering to many different body shapes. The neckline isn't too low that you feel exposed, nor do you need an extra layer underneath. The more full skirted portion of the dress falls in an a-line silhouette, skimming over your curves. It also swirls around romantically when you walk. The fabric is a poly/spandex blend that is smooth and feels cool against the skin. I'm 5'9" and this dress hit me right around the ankles at its longest point. The colored bands don't line up in the front, which I feel keeps the eye moving and helps the bottom portion of the dress look balanced. (I'm wearing this dress in a 2X.)
Because this dress combines the bright color combo with black, it is an easy dress to style in both casual and dressy tones. It would be just as pretty at a summer wedding as it would be at lunch with friends. I look forward to styling it in different ways as I continue to wear it. I paired it with the Staple Shrug, also from Catherines, because it is made of the same material and gave a seamless look to the ensemble while providing some arm coverage. This shrug has great gathers in the back that give a little more swing and flounce than your average shrug. (I'm wearing the shrug in a 2X.)
I kept my accessories simple this time around with a pink and orange statement necklace and my strappy Isotoner sandals that I have been wearing quite a lot. These sandals are a size 11 and fit my wide-ish feet very well. The ankle straps fit well, but I do have them on the last available hole. However, they do have room for you to punch extra holes if you have larger ankles. They have been great for walking and go with so many of my clothing options. Amazon also has them available in bronze and white.
